Held annually each December, the Guy Kirkpatrick Memorial Tournament is the first tournament of the Northern polo season, setting the tone for the months ahead. Played across two days, the weekend combines competitive chukkas with a distinctly informal atmosphere, encouraging spectators to experience polo up close from field side.
Open to the public, the event invites guests to bring a picnic rug, gazebo or umbrella, settle beneath the estate’s expansive London plane trees, and enjoy polo in a relaxed country setting. With free entry and generous space across the grounds, the tournament offers an easy, family-friendly introduction to the sport.

Guests are encouraged to arrive early and enjoy the estate at their own pace. Upon entering the Hololio driveway, follow the road through to the polo grounds where ample parking is available.

Please park clear of horse trucks and pony lines
Sunscreen, hats and shade structures are recommended
Picnics are welcome; spectators are asked to remain field-aware during play

The tournament is held in memory of Guy Colin Kirkpatrick
26 June 1974 – 7 January 2021
Established to honour Guy’s enduring connection to the polo community, the memorial tournament reflects the values of camaraderie, sportsmanship and a shared love of the game. Guy was a charismatic, talented and highly respected polo player — a member of the Poverty Bay Polo Club, a representative of New Zealand, and a professional who worked extensively in both England and Australia.
Each year, players and spectators come together not only to open the season, but to recognise the people and relationships that give polo its lasting sense of community and tradition.

Guests are invited to explore what lies ahead, including the inaugural Forsyth Barr Polo Masters at Hololio, taking place in February 2026 — a premium, high-goal tournament showcasing elite play and elevated spectator experiences.
