Hololio’s Heritage

Hololio House sits at the heart of a landscape shaped by early European settlement and generations of care. The estate was originally established by the Munro family, among Clevedon’s founding settlers in the late nineteenth century, with the homestead constructed in 1892 on fertile land bordering the Wairoa River.

In 1981, the property was purchased from Munro descendants by current owner Nick Jones. What followed was not reinvention, but considered restoration. The original homestead—now known as Hololio House—was carefully preserved and sympathetically updated, retaining its architectural integrity while quietly introducing modern comforts. Over time, the surrounding land was restored and landscaped, allowing the estate’s natural beauty, river setting, and historic prominence within Clevedon to re-emerge.

“Hololio stands as a rare example of a heritage estate that has been protected, lived in, and allowed to evolve.”

Hololio Estate Today

Hololio is a working estate, actively cared for and stewarded by its owners, Nick Jones and Josephine Elworthy, who live on the land in a separate residence.

Their long-standing connection to polo has shaped Hololio into one of Auckland’s most recognised polo venues, with the grounds hosting national and international tournaments throughout the season.

While polo remains central to its identity, Hololio is equally defined by its hospitality. Weddings, events, and accommodation are thoughtfully hosted across Hololio House, the Poolhouse, and surrounding grounds, with an emphasis on privacy, space, and a sense of place that feels increasingly rare within Auckland.

Explore Hololio

Across the estate, a series of distinct spaces offers flexibility without compromise. Hololio House remains the centrepiece—an elegant homestead accommodating up to 16 guests. Nearby, the poolhouse provides a contemporary counterpoint, designed for relaxed gatherings and summer entertaining. Beyond, the grounds unfold into expansive lawns, river views, and polo fields that give the estate its scale and sense of openness.
